In an earlier article, I talked about how toxins affect our body and what are the most common ways to detoxify inside out. You can check it here. Detoxification is an essential process that helps us to get rid of the toxins we accumulate in different ways (food we eat, environmental exposure, stress, etc.). Today I’m going to present you chlorella benefits and how it can fight cell damage and prevent certain diseases, such as cancer, diabetes, cognitive and heart problems.
What is chlorella?
Chlorella is freshwater algae and a superfood. It contains chlorophyll that is packed with health benefits and is rich in protein, iron, zinc, vitamins A, B, and C. When ingested, chlorophyll activates the majority of antioxidants and it encourages them to fight free radicals (i.e. pollution, everything we put in our bodies, food, alcohol, etc.). What represents a pure miracle is that chlorella has the most chlorophyll found in a plant that is so rich in antioxidants. It also contains lutein, betacarotene and many minerals. Many studies showed that can help with weight loss, reducing inflammation and it can also benefit some cancer treatments. This might be because chlorella helps the body detoxify from heavy metals.
Chlorella is often used as a food supplement. However, we started to find it in skin-care products thanks to its antioxidant benefits.
Chlorella skin benefits
- it improves the overall tone
- it restores the production of skin’s collagen
- it helps fight against ageing and permanent sun damage
- it is good for all skin types
- it calms redness and inflammation
Research conducted in 2015 has found that chlorella can help fight acne and reduce inflammation due to its lipid extracts. Due to its antioxidants properties it also protects against damage.
Chlorella health benefits
1. Very Nutritious. …
Also called the ‘super food’, chlorella is rich in many nutrients (proteins, amino acids, minerals, vitamins, omega-3s and fibre).
2. Binds to Heavy Metals, Aiding Detox. …
It’s rare for people to have big quantities of heavy metals in their bodies. However, some jobs might expose us to them. Chlorella has been found to reduce heavy toxicity in the liver, brain and kidneys.
It has also been found to reduce toxicity caused by other chemicals (such as food).
3. Could Enhance Your Immune System. …
Your immune system keeps you healthy by fighting infections. In one small study, men produced more antibodies when taking chlorella than when they took a placebo. Antibodies help fight foreign invaders in the body.
4. May Help Improve Cholesterol
Some studies suggest that chlorella might help lower cholesterol due to some of the nutrients it contains (niacin, fibre, carotenoids and antioxidants).
Chlorella’s content of the following nutrients may help improve blood lipid levels:
- Niacin: A B vitamin known to lower cholesterol
- Fibre: A cholesterol-lowering agent
- Carotenoids: Have been shown to naturally lower cholesterol
- Antioxidants: Help prevent the oxidation of LDL cholesterol, which is known to contribute to heart disease
5. Antioxidant Properties
Chlorella contains antioxidants such as omega-3s, vitamin C, and carotenoids like beta-carotene and lutein. These nutrients fight cell damage in our bodies and prevent diseases such as diabetes, cancer, cognitive or heart problems.
A human study showed chlorella supplements increased antioxidant levels in chronic cigarette smokers, a population at a higher risk of oxidative damage.
6. Regulates Blood Pressure
Chlorella also promotes kidney and heart health, which is essential for healthy blood pressure. Some nutrients that chlorella contains, such as potassium, calcium and omega-3s might prevent arteries from hardening.
7. Promotes eye Health
Chlorella contains lutein and zeaxanthin. These are two carotenoids that protect the eye and lower the chance of developing macular degeneration.
8. Relieves PMS
Chlorella contains calcium and B-vitamins which are proven to reduce PMS. Thus, it might be a good ally if taken before and during the menstrual cycle.
Who should take chlorella?
Despite its health benefits, chlorella isn’t for everyone. Chlorella may make it harder for certain blood-thinning drugs to work. Also, some chlorella supplements contain iodine- people with allergies to iodine should avoid them.
How to take chlorella?
It’s best to take chlorella in the morning. But it can also be taken in two or three doses throughout the day. Take chlorella before meals and with a large glass of water.
If you prefer the powder, you can mix it into a smoothie or in water.
There are a variety of options on the market you can choose from. I personally prefer going with the tablets as they are easier to take and to be honest, the powder doesn’t really have a great taste. This is the brand I am currently using. Be-Life has been founded in Belgium in 1991 and they are experts in nutritherapy programs and passionate about herbal medicine. Their supplements have a high content of active ingredients, which means that they are highly absorbed by the body. You can visit this link to read more about the brand and their food supplements.
